BirdsMalta Goes Parrots: Conures & Parakeet Care in Malta
Share
A parrot brings curiosity, companionship and a serious long-term commitment. At BirdsMalta.com™, our Medium to Large Parakeets & Parrots collection now includes green-cheek conures, Alexandrine parakeets and a plum-headed parakeet. This guide helps you prepare a suitable home, choose food and enrichment, and understand the patient care a semi-tame young bird needs.
Meet our 2026 conures and parakeets
The birds in these new listings were born in 2026, are ringed and eat independently. They are described as semi-tame: trust still needs to be built gently. Sex is not stated. Bird DNA sexing is optional after purchase. Photographs show the actual birds, although lighting and screen settings can affect colour.
Green-Cheek Conures in Malta
Pyrrhura molinae. Green-cheek conures are active, social parrots that benefit from daily interaction, safe exercise and plenty of suitable items to chew. Their compact size does not remove their need for space, attention or a long-term care commitment.
Alexandrine Parakeets in Malta
Psittacula eupatria. Alexandrines are large, long-tailed parakeets with powerful beaks. Prioritise room to move and stretch without striking the bars, generous tail clearance, robust safe furnishings and daily supervised exercise. A spacious aviary may be more appropriate than a small household cage.
Plum-Headed Parakeets in Malta
Psittacula cyanocephala. Plum-headed parakeets are active, long-tailed birds that need generous flight space, suitable enrichment and patient handling. Young birds do not yet show their full adult head colour. Appearance at this age is not used here to assign a sex.
Cockatiels in Malta
Explore our Cockatiels collection, including our 2026 Grey Cockatiel. Each listing includes photographs of the actual bird and a care sheet to help you prepare its new home.
You can also meet our Yellow-Sided Green-Cheek Conure in the existing Green-Cheek Conures collection. Check the individual listings for current availability.
Choose space first, then the cage
Your parrot needs an enclosure that allows comfortable movement and wing stretching, suitable bar spacing and enough clearance for its tail. Prioritise usable width and depth; the stand and external play top do not increase the enclosed living space. Large, active parakeets need substantial flight space. Daily supervised exercise complements suitable housing; it does not make an undersized cage appropriate.
Prepare your setup with BirdsMalta
Explore bird and parrot cages, including the Calla cage and Parrot House play-top cage. Compare the usable enclosure dimensions, bar spacing and tail clearance for your species; a tall stand is not extra living space. Larger parakeets need generous flight space and may require a larger enclosure or aviary. Ask us for help selecting a suitable setup.
Browse ZuPreem Medium and ZuPreem Medium/Large diets, selecting a pellet size appropriate for the individual, together with foraging and chewing toys. Introduce any new food gradually and confirm suitability with us or your avian vet.
A balanced diet for conures and parakeets
Start by matching the bird’s current feeding routine. Suitable formulated diets can be part of balanced feeding alongside appropriate vegetables and other foods recommended for the individual. ZuPreem Medium bird food and ZuPreem Medium/Large bird food are available in our catalogue. Pellet size and the complete feeding plan should suit the species and individual. Avoid abrupt changes and monitor actual intake during any transition.
Seed and treats should not displace balanced nutrition. Fresh water should always be available, with bowls washed regularly. Ask an avian vet about individual requirements, especially if the bird is reluctant to eat a new food.
How to build trust with a semi-tame parrot
Begin with calm company and short, predictable interactions. Speak softly, notice the bird’s body language and reward voluntary approaches. Let it move away. Avoid forcing it onto your hand, chasing it around the cage or using punishment. Trust develops at different speeds, and a bird’s temperament cannot be guaranteed.
Arrange safe opportunities to explore, chew and forage. Rotate suitable toys and check them for damage. Our foraging, shredding and chewing toys can help you provide variety; always choose suitable materials and sizes and supervise new items.
Quarantine and a calm first week
Keep a new bird separate from existing birds, ideally in another room, and arrange an avian veterinary examination. Follow your vet’s quarantine plan before gradual, supervised introductions. Use separate equipment and good hygiene. Prepare food, water, perches and secure housing before arrival so the bird can settle without unnecessary handling.
Everyday safety and when to call a vet
Secure windows and doors before exercise; switch fans off and keep other pets away. Avoid smoke, aerosols and fumes from overheated non-stick cookware. Give the bird a consistent routine and quiet rest at night.
Watch for changes in eating, droppings, posture, activity or breathing. Birds can conceal illness, so an unusually quiet or persistently fluffed bird, reduced intake or breathing difficulty warrants prompt avian veterinary advice. Online advice cannot diagnose a sick bird.

Frequently asked questions
Are these birds fully weaned?
Yes. These conures and parakeets are eating independently. Our still-hand-feeding lovebirds are a separate category with different care requirements.
Can I choose a male or female?
Sex is not stated for these individuals. Optional DNA sexing can be purchased after choosing your bird.
Are the colour mutations guaranteed?
Colour names describe visible appearance. Exact genetic mutations are not certified from photographs, and colours can look different under different lighting and screen settings.
Do you also stock lovebirds?
Yes. Browse Fischer’s lovebirds or all available birds. Prepare a separate, suitable setup before adding any new bird to your household.
Can I return a live bird or get a lifespan guarantee?
There is no voluntary change-of-mind return or additional lifespan guarantee. Responsible ongoing care and prompt veterinary attention are essential. Your statutory consumer rights remain unaffected; contact us promptly with any concern.
