Care sheet — Alexandrine Parakeets
Psittacula eupatria. Alexandrines are large, long-tailed parakeets with powerful beaks. Prioritise room to move and stretch without striking the bars, generous tail clearance, robust safe furnishings and daily supervised exercise. A spacious aviary may be more appropriate than a small household cage.
Settling in safely
Prepare the enclosure before delivery. Give your bird a calm settling-in period, a predictable routine and gentle, positive interactions. Semi-tame does not mean that a bird will immediately accept handling. Let it approach at its own pace; never chase, punish or force contact.
Keep a new bird separate from resident birds, ideally in another room, and arrange an avian veterinary check. Follow your vet’s quarantine advice before gradual, supervised introductions. Keep hands, bowls and equipment clean.
Food, enrichment & everyday safety
Ask us what the bird currently eats and change diets gradually. Provide fresh drinking water, a suitable balanced diet and appropriate fresh vegetables. Avoid an all-seed diet. Offer safe chewing and foraging activities, varied perches and supervised exercise in a secure room. Protect birds from smoke, aerosols, overheated non-stick cookware, open windows, fans and other pets. Allow a quiet, regular night’s rest.
Monitor appetite, droppings, activity and body weight. Persistent fluffed posture, unusual quietness, breathing difficulty or reduced eating need prompt avian veterinary attention; birds can hide illness.

Prepare your setup with BirdsMalta
Explore bird and parrot cages, including the Calla cage and Parrot House play-top cage. Compare the usable enclosure dimensions, bar spacing and tail clearance for your species; a tall stand is not extra living space. Larger parakeets need generous flight space and may require a larger enclosure or aviary. Ask us for help selecting a suitable setup.
Browse ZuPreem Medium and ZuPreem Medium/Large diets, selecting a pellet size appropriate for the individual, together with foraging and chewing toys. Introduce any new food gradually and confirm suitability with us or your avian vet.
Live birds: handover, care and returns
We do not offer discretionary change-of-mind returns, exchanges or refunds on live birds. Any mandatory right of withdrawal, refund or other statutory remedy remains unaffected.
We record videos of the birds before dispatch to document their appearance and behaviour at that time. Delivery is arranged within 24 hours, and we contact you before travelling. The journey is normally around 20–30 minutes where distance and traffic allow; the actual journey time may vary.
Once the bird has been delivered and handed over, you are responsible for its suitable housing, feeding, handling, hygiene and veterinary care. We do not accept responsibility for harm caused by inappropriate care or mishandling after handover, to the extent permitted by law.
Unless expressly specified in the listing or confirmed in writing, we do not guarantee a particular temperament, behaviour, sex or lifespan. “Semi-tame” describes current handling experience and does not promise future behaviour. Optional DNA sexing can be purchased separately.
If you have any concern, contact sales@birdsmalta.com or WhatsApp +356 7711 5222. We can share available pre-delivery videos and photographs to help review the concern. If the bird may be unwell, seek prompt advice from an avian vet.
Photo information: Colours may vary slightly with lighting and your screen’s brightness, resolution and display settings. Photographs show the actual birds. Colour descriptions are visual descriptions, not a guarantee of a particular genetic mutation.
